What to Do When You Feel "Pointlessly Inspired"

Have you ever wanted to suddenly write - more than anything in the world - and had no idea what to write about or where to even start? It's like when you'd like nothing more than to listen to some music, but all of your playlists are bland and out-of-date. Well, here are a few pointers on how to channel that energy into a writing project.

Figure out what type of thing you want to write. Are all your emotions bursting to get out and you have a feeling it won’t last long? Write a short story. Are particularly dark scenes rising to your mind? Work on that post apocalyptic/action/drama novel. If you can figure out what type of thing you want to write, it’ll make the rest of the work infinitely easier.

Hone in on your emotions with music. Carefully observe what types of music are appealing to you in this time and take from that what you will. If one playlist is sticking out in your mind, think seriously about the overall theme of the songs in that playlist and write about that.

Don't pressure yourself to write. The worst thing you can do for your writing is forcing it. If you really, really want to write but are finding you just can't, that's okay! It won't be the last time you ever feel an urge to write, after all.

Try anything. Even if you know nothing will come of it, jot down the random scenes that might pop into your head. Work on some aspect of writing that you've been meaning to, such as scenery, character development, or dialogue. Describe random scenes from one of your stories or a nonexisting one!

Honestly, I'm not quite qualified to make this post. I experience pointless ambition so often and never quite know what to do with it. Who knows - maybe I'll be able to take my own advice to help channel these feelings!
